The Ravens are raving about Mrs. Samlley~Ready Teacher~Houston Teacher of the Month for March!! Mrs. Smalley is a new teacher and has a unique challenge of teaching one of the Autism (Ready Units) in Bryan. She is the type of teacher who strives to be the best. Mrs. Smalley saw a need for students with sensory issues in our school. She decided that she would try to get funding for a sensory motor lab by writing a grant to the educational foundation. BISD Education Foundation agreed with the information they received and awarded the amount that was requested to fund the Sensory Motor Lab. Mrs. Smalley has also helped problem solve the special education schedule to help ensure that all students were in the LRE and in inclusion to the maximum extent appropriate. During the month of January, our campus had to hire a new special education teacher to replace a teacher who had taken another assignment. Mrs. Smalley took this new teacher under her wing and helped her prepare lesson plans, showed her how to use CLASS and the Bridge program, and helped her to create behavioral IEP goals for a student. Mrs. Smalley is willing to lend a hand and works on building relationships with students all over the building. She has a very good relationship with a student who has some behavioral challenges. She tries to intervene with that student when she sees him struggling and helps him to remember his strategies to remain calm. Mrs. Smalley is the door holder in the morning for bus duty and greets every student with a smile, high five, or hug. I appreciate the dedication and drive that Mrs. Smalley has towards helping all students succeed.
