Bryan ISD Board Approves Raises and Boosts Bilingual Stipend

The Bryan ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved nearly doubling the stipend for bilingual classroom teachers from $3,500 per year to $6,000 annually. Bilingual educators are increasingly difficult to find in Texas, and about 53 percent of students in Bryan ISD are Hispanic. The district’s bilingual programs are attractive and heavily populated, with the district is growing by approximately 150-200 bilingual students per year.

The board’s support of the administration’s recommendation reflects a strong, district-wide commitment to entice quality bilingual educators to locate in Bryan and stay in Bryan.

The increase places Bryan ISD among the top districts in Texas for bilingual stipends and is expected to give Bryan ISD a competitive edge in recruiting.

In other business, the board unanimously supported converting the District’s current teacher/counselor salary schedule to be for new hires only (commonly referred to as a “hire-in schedule”). Qualifying returning teachers/counselors will receive either the greater of the step increase or $1,200 above their current base pay.

See the example below:

Step 2015-2016
0 $ 41,000
1 $ 41,750
2 $ 42,250
3 $ 42,650
4 $ 42,950
5 $ 43,150

A current BISD teacher on step 3 for 2014-2015 makes $42,650 and qualifies for an increase based on an additional year of service and a satisfactory evaluation. For 2015-2016, their annual base pay will be $43,850 ($42,650 + $1,200) because this is greater than step 4 on the hire in schedule of $42,950.

Paraprofessional, hourly, auxiliary, professional and administrative staff were unanimously approved to receive an average pay increase of 2.6 percent (at the midpoint of salaries by pay grade).

By policy, any employee whose performance evaluation was less than satisfactory will not receive an increase in pay.

Raises and stipend increases will be included in the final budget, which will be presented for board approval in August.
