Bryan ISD's multi-level program for gifted and talented students is designed to serve the individual needs of those who perform or show potential of performing at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience or environment. Our vision is that all schools in Bryan ISD will provide dynamic, differentiated learning environments, which challenge students to develop their intellectual power, creativity and sense of self.
A gifted and talented student is one who, by virtue of outstanding mental abilities, is capable of high performance. The student may demonstrate, singly or in combination, above average achievement or potential in such areas as general intellectual ability, or specific subject matter aptitude. The phrase does not include students who demonstrate above-average achievement or potential in areas relating to physical abilities. (Education Code 29.123)
Asynchronous development defines the difference between gifted students and all others. All gifted students will exhibit evidence of asynchronous development. An excellent definition comes from a group of respected professionals in the field of gifted:
Giftedness is asynchronous development in which advanced cognitive abilities and heightened intensity combine to create inner experiences and awareness that are qualitatively different from the norm. This asynchrony increases with higher intellectual capacity. The uniqueness of the gifted renders them particularly vulnerable and requires modifications in parenting, teaching and counseling in order for them to develop optimally. (The Columbus Group, 1991).
